His professional affiliations were extensive. He was able to accomplish his studies on sabbatical leave from the Westfield Normal School from 1909 - 1910. He received a degree of Doctor of Science from Johns Hopkins University in 1908 as well as a Doctor of Philosophy in 1910. He became head of the Department of Science in 1897, a position he held until his retirement in 1932. He was hired to teach zoology, physiology, botany, mineralogy and geology as well as natural science. He began teaching at the Westfield Normal School in 1896.
